ABOUT THE YOUNG ISRAEL OF NORTH BELLMORE
North Bellmore is a small community on the South Shore of Long Island, just off exits 25 and 26 on the Southern State Parkway. We have all the usual amenities of a Nassau County community including shopping, parks and pools, and we’re close enough to New York City, by car or by Long Island Rail Road, to give us access to all that the Big Apple offers.
The Young Israel of North Bellmore has been in existence for close to forty years and many of the founding members are still active participants in the shul’s activities. Our members run the gamut of orthodox tradition: we have women who wear wigs to shul, we have women who wear hats, we have men who wear hats and men who wear every style of kippot from velvet to suede, leather to crocheted. There are people who were raised in frum homes and are raising their children the same way and there are those who have been brought closer to orthodox traditions by their children. No matter what the current level of observance or style of dress, people in our shul are accepted as they are and welcomed enthusiastically.
Most of the young people go to the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County (HANC) for elementary and high schools though there are quite a few choosing other options like Shulamit and South Shore in the Five Towns, Torah Academy of Long Island (TALI) in Syosset and Hebrew Academy of Long Beach (HALB). The county provides free transportation to all.
Housing in North Bellmore can range from rental apartments, co-ops and condos, to full size homes of varying price ranges. Our shul is located just south of Jerusalem Avenue. Members live within a wide area, with some people walking as much as two miles each way. Of course, there are others who live just a few blocks from the shul.
We have daily minyanim, classes for men and women during the week, youth groups on Shabbat and special youth activities each month. Other links on this web site will give more details about our schedule.
Those are the facts. What is unusual about the Young Israel of North Bellmore is the warmth and congeniality of the membership. On any given Shabbat, you’ll find people joining each other for lunch without regard to background, upbringing or age range. The younger children feel very close to their baby-sitter aged friends and the high schoolers find and maintain friendships with college-aged mentors. The adults socialize across the generations. Some find that they fit in age between the parents and adult children of a family, so they become close to both.
Lots of families are willing and eager to host you for a Shabbat if you’d like to see our shul and community up close. Many people who have visited have commented on the outgoing and friendly people and we’d love to have you join their ranks.
Although we’re eager to have our community grow, we hope to never lose that small, close-knit feeling that makes the Young Israel of North Bellmore special.
